Stone Mountain Day Trip

We took a family day trip to Stone Mountain State Park in Northwest North Carolina Sunday after church for a picnic and hike. It was a gorgeous day with perfect 80 degree weather!

Along the trail we saw a big sign that said "Fatalities Have Occurred Here" so we knew we were in for a strenuous workout ahead. After finally reaching the bottom of the Stone Mountain Falls the kids played on the boulders for quite sometime. Mike and Devin disappeared up into the trees. I THOUGHT they were just looking out over the hillside.... NOPE! Seems my brilliant husband and daring son decided they were going to climb to the top of the waterfall!!! Mike admits now that it probably wasn't the smartest thing he's ever done!

Once they recovered from their journey we headed back up the mountain... 392 steps UP the mountain! I thought I was going to die!!! Thank the Lord a bench was placed after every 40-50 steps to sit and rest... because that we did!! Devin beat us to the van and had it nice and cool for us!! Such a good kid!

It was a great day, a great hike, we had great laughs, and just had a great time!

Surprise!!!!!!

This was the look on Devin's face as Grandma and Grandpa Lyons walked in the door Sunday afternoon... Priceless!!

I'll back up... Friday evening, Ray called my cell phone to say they were 4 hours away and had an extra day, they'd like to come visit for a night. Of course we said yes considering they live 12 hours away! But, we decided NOT to tell the kids and really make it a surprise. All we told them was we were having a "family day" on Sunday because Devin was gone for a week. So, we went to church, came home, ate lunch, and began to "make plans"... knowing that the grandparents were just a short while away...

It truly was a fun surprise and the smiles were amazing! We spent Sunday afternoon just visiting, then headed to Old Bethabara Park before returning home to grill out.

Sadly, they had to leave on Monday morning... but they'll be back in July!

Mother's Day at Hanging Rock

After our original plan of going to Kentucky for Mother's Day (to spend it with my family) got nixed... I thought for sure the whole weekend would just fall apart and be like any other Sunday. But, after church we decided to give Hanging Rock State Park a try. We were told they had gorgeous trails with amazing views and lots of waterfalls. We were NOT let down!

We had a fabulous afternoon of hiking and exploring the waterfalls and cliffs. Even Paige managed to hike and climb 3 hours on a "moderate" level trail! The kids all enjoyed it and we took lots of pictures to share.

The biggest highlight of the afternoon was Mike learning to rock climb... as taught by his teenage son! The video below shows exactly how well that went!

(Disclaimer added per Mike's request...
Devin did NOT help him scale this! He was simply there to spot him LOL!)

I had a fabulous day and took a few moments out to Thank our Heavenly Father for providing such a gorgeous afternoon to spend with my family while sitting on a log just taking in the glorious scenery!

And as I sit on the back deck tonight, I thank my family for giving me a Mother's Day I will never forget!

Happy Mother's Day to Everyone!!!

Small Group Fellowship Day...

A small group fellowship cookout was a great way to end the winter small-group Bible study. The Lester's (our leaders) hosted. It was +90 degrees... but the kids didn't seem to mind! Lesters were prepared with a triple slip & slide, a whale pool, and another small pool! Fun stuff watching them play all day!

Thank you Sara & Moose!!!

I Think We're Back to Our "Normal"

Just a quick update... Paige is completely recovered from pneumonia. The only medicine she's on now is Singulair. Her doctor wants her to take it for 3 months to get through the spring. I think she's even de-toxed now from the steroids! We're seeing our fun Paige again instead of the one who throws temper tantrums and is moodier than a lady going through menopause!

Chase has done very well the last 2 days also with no complaints of pain or visible trouble. He's a tad grouchy... but I think that's because he's had such a lack of sleep this week! He does have to see the doctor next Friday for follow up and to determine if they'll do anything further at this time.

So... we're back to our "normal".

It's Just Life As We Know It...

Someone said to me today "your life is like a circus... it's always something" and kind of laughed. Even though I know the person meant it in good fun, it hurt to hear it because we can't change what we've been dealt. We have to face things head on.

I said to a good friend later "I just wish our life were normal." She then said to me... "but really, what is normal?" That statement has stuck with me all day.

From the very beginning it was one thing after another. The night of our wedding it was below zero, record setting, low temps. We left the reception and went to our new home that night, to find that our furnace stopped working. We called some local hotels - NONE had occupancy! So, we wrapped up in clothes, blankets, and whatever we could find and slept in the smallest (but warmest) room of the house. The next morning, after unthawing, we went to leave for our honeymoon only to find that the antifreeze had frozen!

In the almost 18 years of marriage since then we have been dealt one thing after another... risky pregnancies, premature deliveries, devastating miscarriages, cancer, seizures, one injury after another, a child with an auto-immune heart disease, car accidents, and so much more. Our life rarely goes a month without some sort of doctor's appointment or crisis. Usually, we handle things pretty well and people are amazed that we are able to just brush it off as another day in the Lyons family.

In the last few weeks though, we have had more than our fair share thrown at us between Paige's pneumonia, Devin's ankle, and Chase's chest pain. Again today, Chase had another episode of dizziness, chest pain, and fever. We both dropped everything and rushed him to the doctor - yet again with no answers.

For the first time in a while, I am feeling very frustrated and overwhelmed. I've even shed a few tears. Michael is so strong and always so positive and seems to sense when I start to feel this way. He is so reassuring when he says to me "it is going to be FINE". And I know that he's 99% of the time right. It's so good to have him on my side!

The other thing I have on my side.... Faith! We have always been given the strength we need and a we always have a feeling of peace and comfort in everything that comes our way.

Last night, I read this:

2 Corinthians 1:3 & 4
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received.

Admittedly, last night I just skimmed across these verses as I read the chapter. But after the events of today I was reminded of it and went back to read it again. I think it sort of answers those "why me?" questions that often pop up in my mind. A response to my comment to Evelyn today when I said "I just wish our life was normal". All of the things we have been through... the little things like freezing our tail ends off on our wedding night to the bigger things like watching Chase in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit receiving treatment for KD... we were being taught comfort... compassion... peace... and love so that we may be able to help others.

So for all of you who say "I just don't know how you do it"... or "your life is like a circus... it's always something" - you're right! But I have Jesus on my side so it'll be OK!

Weekend at Salt Fork

Mike and I, along with Chase and Paige, spend the weekend at Salt Fork State Park Lodge with Mike's family to celebrate his Dad's birthday. (See the post below on why Devin and Kayleigh weren't with us.) We spent Saturday enjoying the view from the deck while the kids played, swimming at the indoor pool, hiking Knob Trail, dinner, birthday cake, and family.

Mike and I drove home Sunday afternoon... right into a nasty snowstorm that started at the northern Virginia line, and we didn't drive out of it until the southern Virginia line!! The kids were pretty good considering the tension in the car!! As you can see in the video... it was not a friendly drive!

Once we crossed the North Carolina line it was pretty much just rain... until we got home! This is our street after the first real snow storm since we moved to North Carolina! Our total was 5 inches... areas nearby got as much as 8 inches!!!

We had a great weekend, despite the chilly ending! Lots of memories made with the Lyons Family!
